Airport buses

The Flybus and Airport Direct both leave from right outside the arrivals hall and are timed to meet every arriving flight, including delayed ones. The main buses go to their terminals in Reykjavík (BSÍ and Skógarhlíð), where you can change to a minibus for hotel or bus-stop drop-off for a little extra. Downtown streets are closed to large coaches, so many hotels are served from numbered bus stops a few minutes' walk away.

Pre-booking guarantees a seat and usually costs the same or less than buying on arrival.

Fitting in the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is 20 minutes from the airport, so many travellers visit straight after landing or before an evening flight. Transfers run airport → Blue Lagoon → Reykjavík and back, and there is luggage storage at the lagoon. Leave at least 3 hours for the lagoon itself, and book both the lagoon slot and the transfer in advance.

Hiring a car at the airport

All the big rental companies and many local ones have desks in or a short shuttle ride from the terminal. If you are only staying in Reykjavík for the first days, consider picking the car up later: parking downtown is limited and paid.
